Anaesthesia protocol evaluation of the videolaryngoscopy with the McGrath MAC and direct laryngoscopy for tracheal intubation in 1000 patients underg…

2021

IntroductionRapid sequence induction of anaesthesia is indicated in patients with an increased risk of pulmonary aspiration. The main objective of the technique is to reduce the critical time period between loss of airway protective reflexes and rapid inflation of the cuff of the endotracheal tube to minimise the chance of aspiration of gastric contents. The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of first-pass intubation success to ensure patient and healthcare worker safety. The aim of this study is to compare the first-pass intubation success rate (FPS) using the videolaryngoscopy compared with conventional direct laryngoscopy in surgical patients with a high risk of pulmonary as…

The EasyTube for Airway Management in Emergencies

2005

The EasyTube (EzT) is a new sterile, disposable airway device approved by the European Union in February 2003 and by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January 2005. The two-lumen design of the EzT enables it to be used as an endotracheal tube or as a supraglottic emergency airway. To report the preliminary experiences with the EzT airway device in prehospital and in-hospital emergency airway management procedures. All airway management procedures involving the EzT were recorded for a period of 18 months. The EzT was successfully used to intubate 15 patients with unanticipated airway difficulties during either anesthesia induction or prehospital airway management. In all patients, the Ez…

Comparison of two different techniques of fibreoptic intubation

2009

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The application of analgesics and sedatives during fibreoptic intubation (FOI) may result in a transient decrease in arterial oxygen saturation. This study evaluates two different techniques of FOI and respective effects on procedural duration, arterial oxygen saturation, and coughing by the patient. METHODS Thirty-four patients received a standardized conscious sedation with fentanyl (1.5 microg kg(-1)) and midazolam (12.5 microg kg(-1)).All patients were randomly allocated to one of the following techniques: the 'vaporization' (VAP) technique included four applications of 2 ml lidocaine 2% administered through the working channel of the fibrescope supplying an oxyg…

Alternatives to Endotracheal Intubation for Patients with Neuromuscular Diseases

2005

To evaluate the usefulness of continuous noninvasive mechanical ventilation and mechanical coughing aids to avoid endotracheal intubation and tracheostomy during episodes of acute respiratory failure in patients with neuromuscular disease. We conducted a prospective cohort study at the respiratory medicine ward of a university hospital to study the success rate of the use of continuous noninvasive mechanical ventilation and manually and mechanically (CoughAssist) assisted coughing to avert endotracheal intubation in 24 consecutive episodes of acute respiratory failure for 17 patients with neuromuscular disease. The noninvasive mechanical ventilation and coughing aids were used to reverse dec…

The novel video-assisted intubating laryngeal mask Totaltrack compared to the intubating laryngeal mask Fastrach - a controlled randomized manikin st…

2017

BACKGROUND The novel Totaltrack combines a supraglottic airway device with video laryngoscopic tracheal intubation. The intubation laryngeal mask Fastrach is an established device without visual control of intubation. We hypothesized that supraglottic ventilation success with Totaltrack would be similar to Fastrach, but intubation would be performed faster due to visual control of the procedure. METHODS Fifty-five anaesthesiologists were randomized into one of two study arms: Fastrach Totaltrack. After a standardized introduction, six consecutive attempts of supraglottic ventilation and intubation attempts with each of one of the devices were performed on an airway manikin. The combined pri…

2021

The authors regret that errors were present in the above article. On page 1174, in the second paragraph of the Statistical methods section, the second sentence should read as follows: The incidence of difficult intubation was determined including those whose tracheas were already intubated and is reported as a percentage with a 95% exact binomial CI. On page 1175, in the third paragraph of the Statistical methods section ‘mean standardised difference (MSD)’ should read ‘standardised mean difference (SMD)’ The authors would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Clinical Use of Oxygen Stores: Pre-oxygenation and Apneic Oxygenation

1992

During states of respiratory arrest the human oxygen stores may be used therapeutically, regardless of the origin, i.e. either prior to the routinely induced apnea for endotracheal intubation or as an emergency measure in any other case of apnea. The present considerations focus on the clinical use of the oxygen stores available, applying.

A novel device for intracolonoscopy cleansing of inadequately prepared colonoscopy patients: a feasibility study.

2019

Abstract Background The importance of high quality preprocedural bowel preparation is widely acknowledged, but suboptimal bowel cleansing still occurs in up to 20 % of all colonoscopy patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of a novel intraprocedural cleaning device for cleaning poorly prepared colons. Methods This multicenter feasibility study included patients aged 18 – 75 years who were referred for colonoscopy. Intraprocedural cleaning was performed in patients after a limited preprocedural bowel preparation regimen (2 days of dietary restrictions and 2 × 10 mg bisacodyl). The primary outcome was the proportion of adequately prepared patients (Boston Bowel Prepar…
